TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Finance Minister Chuang Tsui-yun (莊翠雲) told the Legislative Yuan on Wednesday that the "Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement" (ADTA) between Taiwan and the United States has gained bipartisan support from the U.S. Congress.
After a recent in-person meeting in Washington, D.C., Chuang expressed optimism about the potential benefits of the ADTA for both countries, emphasizing the Ministry of Finance's cautious approach to advancing the negotiations. She noted that the agreement addresses long-standing concerns from businesses and individuals involved in cross-border investments and operations, with technical consultations ongoing and further discussions held this year.
During a Legislative Yuan Finance Committee session reviewing the "Vehicle License Tax Act" (使用牌照稅法), Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislator Lin Te-fu raised concerns about the impact of President-elect Donald Trump's upcoming policies on Taiwan.
Chuang responded that Taiwan needs to closely monitor the implementation and intensity of U.S. tariffs, domestic taxes, and interest rates once Trump assumes office next year. She assured that the Executive Yuan has established a task force to address these issues carefully.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced on Oct. 29 the commencement of comprehensive negotiations to resolve double taxation issues, with the first round of talks expected in the coming weeks.
