TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Mastercard revealed on Monday (Dec. 23) that Taiwanese skiers spend an average of 5.6 days in Japan during ski trips, costing around NT$36,000. The survey highlighted that shopping expenses account for the most significant portion of their budget at 49%, followed by accommodation at 25%, dining at 13%, and ski-related expenses at only 5%.
Mastercard reported that Niigata Prefecture ranks as the top ski destination for Taiwanese tourists, followed by Hokkaido and Nagano Prefecture. Taiwanese skiers still prefer Niigata Prefecture despite rising costs at Hokkaido resorts and ski areas. Chen Yi-wen (陳懿文), president of Mastercard Taiwan, stated that Taiwanese skiers consider shopping a significant part of their itinerary in addition to skiing activities.
The survey found that 64% of Taiwanese skiers plan one day of skiing during their trip to Japan, 21% plan for two days, and only 15% schedule more than three days. Mastercard's analysis indicated that skiing costs and convenient transportation are the primary factors influencing Taiwanese skiers' choice of ski resorts.
