TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Pingtung County (屏東縣) announced on Friday (Dec. 20) that it is taking decisive action against the invasive green iguana species by hosting a removal training course on Dec. 30. Online registration will open next Monday, and the course will provide residents with the necessary knowledge and skills for effective removal.
The Pingtung County Government's Department of Agriculture (農業處) issued a press release addressing the green iguana invasion. The course will teach participants to remove iguanas in a manner that complies with regulations. The training, available to 150 residents aged 18 and older, aims to ensure humane treatment and adherence to safety guidelines. Participants must sign a removal agreement, prohibiting abusive actions and controversial behaviors like uploading photos.
The department emphasizes that protecting the ecological environment and preventing invasive species from affecting biodiversity is a long-term effort. Officials urge residents to become ecological partners and actively participate in removing invasive species to safeguard Pingtung's green home. The course registration will be available online on the county government and Department of Agriculture websites starting at 5 p.m. next Monday.
Cheng Yung-yu (鄭永裕), director of the department, warns residents to remain vigilant against potential online scams. He advises verifying training-related information through official announcements and contacting the county government for confirmation if encountered on social media platforms.
