TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) strongly condemned legislators from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民主進步黨) early Friday (Dec. 20) as they broke into the Legislative Yuan (立法院) to secure the chamber ahead of a critical vote on three controversial bills later that day.
In a press release, the KMT demanded the resignation of DPP Chair Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and called for DPP legislators to leave the chamber, after several DPP legislators reportedly smashed windows, barricaded doors with chairs, and stationed members outside to guard the entrance overnight.
The KMT criticized the DPP's actions and stated that they would "spend 64 hours upholding democratic rules while the DPP shattered democratic values in one minute." The KMT accused the DPP of acting like bandits, occupying the chamber, and violating democratic principles.
KMT officials pointed out the contradiction between Lai's recent call for rationality and democracy in parliamentary proceedings and the DPP's forceful occupation of the chamber. They claimed this incident highlighted Lai's incompetence and suggested that hawkish DPP members like Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) and Caucus Chief Executive Rosalia Wu (吳思瑤) now control the party, urging Lai to resign.
