TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced on Monday (Dec. 16) a significant increase in Taiwan's central government science and technology budget for the coming year, with the allocation rising by NT$7.7 billion, reaching a total of NT$196.5 billion. This move underscores the government's commitment to the technology sector.
During the 12th National Science and Technology Conference (全國科學技術會議), Lai emphasized the event's importance, held every four years, as a critical platform for government and tech industry collaboration. He credited experts from various sectors for their role in shaping Taiwan's future technological landscape. Reflecting on the last conference four years ago, Lai highlighted the "5+2 Innovative Industries Plan" as pivotal in driving Taiwan's next-generation industries.
Lai addressed challenges such as the rise of artificial intelligence, digital net-zero transformation, and geopolitical shifts. He stressed the need to strengthen the foundation of Taiwan's 5+2 industries and six core strategic industries. The focus will be on developing five key trust industries: semiconductors, artificial intelligence, military technology, security, and next-generation communications.
Lai recalled the breakthrough of the technology budget surpassing NT$100 billion during his tenure as premier. He reiterated the government's aim for Taiwan to become a global tech leader. He also noted the Executive Yuan's approval of six regional flagship plans to promote major infrastructure projects across counties and cities.
