TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) delivered a powerful message on Monday (Dec. 9), reaffirming Taiwan's unwavering dedication to democracy. By evoking the nation's painful past under martial law 38 years ago, he underscored Taiwan's steadfast resolve to never turn back. Speaking during the 2024 Human Rights Day International Seminar (2024人權日國際研討會) hosted by the Executive Yuan, Cho urged resistance against hegemonic actions, noting military exercises and incursions around Taiwan undermine peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
Cho highlighted the Executive Yuan's efforts since 2022 in promoting human rights and transitional justice through seminars, underscoring Taiwan's dedication to universal values. He stressed that human rights are a universal value, linking Taiwan with like-minded countries and partners worldwide and emphasizing the nation's appreciation for its historical legacy. Also, Cho reiterated Taiwan's long-standing opposition to dictatorship, authoritarianism, bullying, and hegemony, asserting the people's power against anti-democratic forces.
The premier pointed out that Taiwan must stand firmly with democratic partners worldwide to safeguard its security and maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific region. He warned that hegemonic expansionism will ultimately face global repudiation and stressed the importance of leaving a legacy of resistance for future generations. Cho's remarks serve as a call to action for Taiwan and its global allies to remain vigilant against threats to democracy and regional stability.
