TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Wednesday (Dec. 4) expressed strong support for Taiwan's democratic values in light of South Korea's recent martial law turmoil. He stated, "Taiwan's democratic development has come this far; it should not and cannot go back."

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol unexpectedly declared martial law Tuesday night but rescinded it hours later. Cho assured the public that the government had monitored the brief martial law situation closely and urged citizens to remain calm.

He emphasized the importance of collective efforts from all political parties and citizens to maintain democratic achievements. He expressed confidence that the Taiwanese people would not tolerate any undemocratic actions domestically.

In another development, former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) recently invited Chinese students to visit Taiwan, sparking discussions over the term "China Taipei." Cho welcomed the visitors but insisted that guests should respect their hosts. He advised them to avoid falling into traps if they doubted the host's identity or position.

Cho underscored the necessity of future cross-strait exchanges based on equality and mutual benefit. He stressed the importance of effective communication and thorough reviews before and after such interactions.
