TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Newly re-elected Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. emphasized on Monday (Nov. 11) the fraternal ties between Taiwan and Palau, extending an invitation to Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) for his inauguration on Jan. 16. Whipps secured re-election with 58% of the vote in the presidential election held on Nov. 5, defeating former President Thomas Remengesau Jr.
In an exclusive interview with TVBS, Whipps addressed China's pressure on Palau through its tourism sector, highlighting Beijing's threats to weaponize tourism should Palau not comply with its demands. Given that tourism constitutes 40% of Palau's economy, he stressed the importance of bolstering economic resilience and expressed interest in expanding into the Australian market.
Whipps also conveyed optimism over Donald Trump's election as U.S. president, appreciating Trump's understanding of the significance of Pacific island nations and anticipating enhanced bilateral relations. He intends to propose new legislation to the incoming Congress aimed at regulating foreign investments and preventing land encroachment.
The president remains hopeful that Taiwan-Palau relations will remain steadfast, underscoring the friendly, brotherly ties between the two nations. As he prepares for his second term, Whipps' focus on strengthening economic resilience and international relations is set to shape potential developments in Palau's economic and diplomatic landscapes.
