TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's minister of environment acknowledged on Friday (Nov. 8) that former U.S. President Donald Trump's return to the White House could temporarily disrupt global climate change efforts. However, the ministry assured that Taiwan's net-zero targets remain steadfast.

During a COP29 Situation Room press conference, Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) noted that Trump's previous four-year administration played a significant role in the energy transition, impacting global efforts.

Peng stated that regardless of Trump's policies or future developments, Taiwan will maintain its net-zero goals while adjusting strategies as needed. He emphasized that a primary objective of establishing the task force during UNFCCC COP29 is to observe international trends and carve out Taiwan's path.

Although Peng has attended 11 COP meetings as a representative of a private organization, he mentioned that this year, due to his official capacity, he is among the few environment ministers not invited. Despite this, the Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) has dispatched colleagues to the conference, and Peng will closely monitor developments.

COP29 will commence on Nov. 11, and Taiwan has yet to receive an invitation. To stay informed about negotiation developments, Peng proposed the idea of a situation room, which he introduced today. The center will use live streaming to monitor key conference highlights, aiding Taiwan's net-zero pathway and climate policy actions.
