TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Emergency Operation Center (中央災害應變中心) emphasized on Sunday (Oct. 6) that its standard operating procedures for Typhoon Gaemi and Typhoon Krathon remain consistent, and no political considerations influence its actions.
This statement aims to counter media criticisms suggesting the center has been overly critical of disaster relief efforts in areas governed by the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨).
The center highlighted the potential for deadly disasters in Hualien due to continuous rainfall and earthquakes during Typhoon Krathon. They prioritized preventive evacuations and urged the Hualien County Government to verify evacuation numbers.
In Keelung City, significant landslides occurred after the typhoon warning was lifted, with debris invading some communities. Authorities evacuated 116 people starting the afternoon of Oct. 3 after multiple reminders.
Moreover, flooding in New Taipei City's Jinshan (金山) and Wanli (萬里) areas underscored the persistent threat in the northeast despite the typhoon's passing.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) reminded citizens that natural disasters are beyond human control and the government must protect lives and property.
The Central Emergency Operation Center reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the public in disaster-stricken areas, asserting that first responders have diligently fulfilled their duties in response to Typhoon Krathon regardless of political stance.
