TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) announced Monday (Oct. 7) that two tropical depressions have formed near Guam, with one expected to upgrade to the 19th typhoon of the year, Barijat (百里嘉), by Oct. 9.
The typhoon will not affect Taiwan, as it will move toward the eastern seas of Japan, the CWA said.
The CWA reported that the northeast monsoon strengthened Monday, resulting in increased moisture across Taiwan. Rain is expected to continue until Wednesday.
Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, and Yilan will experience heavier rainfall. The northern regions, including Hualien, Taitung, Penghu, and Matsu, will see brief showers, while thunderstorms with heavier rain may occur in the afternoon in the central and southern regions.
Residents in Keelung's north coast, Yilan, and greater Taipei's mountainous areas should brace for torrential rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Oct. 10, National Day, moisture levels will slightly decrease, although sporadic showers will persist in eastern regions, greater Taipei's mountainous areas, and Matsu.
The CWA advised that moisture would increase on Friday and Saturday, expanding the rain coverage with cloudy skies and occasional rain in greater Taipei, the eastern regions, and Matsu. Central and southern regions may experience isolated afternoon thunderstorms.
On Sunday, sporadic brief rain is expected in greater Taipei's mountainous areas and eastern regions, while central and southern regions may see isolated afternoon thunderstorms. The CWA encourages residents to stay informed on weather updates as conditions evolve in the coming days.
