TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a heavy rain advisory for 19 areas on Thursday (Oct. 3) as Typhoon Krathon landed in Taiwan.
Pingtung County and Taitung County have experienced torrential downpours, with Taitung's Jinzhenshan (金針山) accumulating over 1,000 millimeters of rain since Wednesday.
CWA warned of continuous wind and rain in southern regions before the typhoon's landfall and predicted extreme rain in Pingtung's mountainous regions.
The storm's intensity is expected to weaken rapidly after landfall, easing wind and rain in the south, though heavy rainfall may continue in the Hualien and Taitung areas.
Meanwhile, the northern, northeastern, and Matsu regions face high rain probabilities due to the northeast monsoon, with persistent showers. Central Taiwan, Penghu, and Kinmen may experience intermittent showers.
The advisory affects areas including Hualien County, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, Chiayi City, Yunlin County, Keelung City, Yilan County, Penghu County, Orchid Island (蘭嶼), Green Island (綠島), Taoyuan City, Changhwa, and Nantou County.
At 6 a.m. Thursday, the typhoon was about 50 kilometers southwest of Kaohsiung. It is moving north-northeast at 8 to 4 kilometers per hour, and landfall is expected around midday.
