TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan-based electric scooter giant Gogoro expressed gratitude to the Industrial Development Administration (IDA, 產發署) on Tuesday (Oct. 1) for clarifying its compliance with domestic production regulations.
The IDA stated that, after a technical review committee examined the submitted documents and conducted a hearing, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that Gogoro's VIVA motor controllers violated the Ministry of Economic Affairs' domestic production subsidy guidelines.
Attributing the issue to an administrative oversight, Gogoro apologized for the inconvenience caused to consumers and authorities, and emphasized plans to strengthen internal controls and preventive mechanisms.
The company committed to offering affected owners free vehicle inspections, maintenance, and a one-year extended warranty. Gogoro said it will email owners with compensation details.
Media reports in May alleged that Gogoro, which prides itself on local production, used Chinese-made components to cut costs. The earliest complaint dates back to 2021.
According to the complaint, since 2018, Gogoro's VIVA model has used motor controllers produced by a Shanghai factory, which account for about 20% of the e-scooter's cost. Gogoro then contracted Taiwanese firms to assemble the motor and the Chinese-made controllers into a power system for the final e-scooter assembly.
