TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Executive Yuan (行政院) announced Monday (Sept. 30) that local governments are responsible for renovating public elementary and middle school buildings, but the central government will continue to assist. In recent years, the central government has invested over NT$100 billion to improve campus facilities.

Executive Yuan Spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝) stated that the Ministry of Education's (MOE, 教育部) proposal to demolish and rebuild old public school buildings from 2025 to 2028 is still under review by the National Development Council (國發會).

She emphasized that the central government has already allocated NT$32.3 billion through special budgets to implement the "air conditioning in every classroom" policy and upgrade electrical systems.

From 2022 to 2025, the central government has committed NT$20 billion to enhance digital learning, including the "internet in every classroom, tablets for every student" program.

Between 2017 and 2020, the government spent NT$35.3 billion on renovating old school buildings and another NT$17.8 billion from 2020 to 2022.

Also, the government invested NT$7.16 billion from 2021 to 2023 to refurbish school playground tracks. Since 2016, it has provided NT$8.35 billion to upgrade old school restrooms. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) recently approved NT$8 billion in special funds for further restroom renovations in public schools, Lee added.

From December 2023 to August 2025, the MOE will reportedly invest NT$2 billion to support campus safety improvement projects. Lee reiterated that the government will continue to assist local governments in allocating resources to ensure students grow and learn in comfortable, healthy, and safe environments.
