TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Weather forecasters reported on Monday (Sept. 30) that with the approach of Typhoon Krathon (山陀兒), northern regions, including Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, and Yilan will likely experience heavy rainfall beginning Wednesday.
Weather forecast group, "Taiwan Typhoon Forum, Weather Express" (台灣颱風論壇|天氣特急) reported that the storm, classified as a Category 3 typhoon, will make landfall near Kaohsiung and Pingtung on Monday evening.
The forum emphasized that the northeast will see the most intense downpours. On Wednesday and Thursday, the outer bands of the typhoon will bring strong winds and rain to the north.
The forum described Typhoon Krathon as a rare and potentially historic storm due to its intensity, size, and path. The typhoon's trajectory appears largely set, with only minor adjustments expected. Southern Taiwan will face the brunt of the storm, with strong winds and heavy rain expected over the next two days.
Coastal areas should prepare for strong gusts, storm surges, and seawater inundation. Although regions from Taoyuan to Yunlin will be shielded by mountain ranges, coastal areas must remain vigilant for strong gusts, and Hsinchu and Miaoli should watch for foehn winds.
After the typhoon moves northeast, cooler air will follow, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures across Taiwan. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.
