TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Agriculture and Food Agency (農糧署) predicted on Monday (Sept. 23) that vegetable prices would stabilize in early October, provided the weather remains stable.

The recent downpours in northern and southern Taiwan have primarily affected short-term leafy vegetables, the agency noted.

Heavy rains have caused vegetable prices to soar in Taipei, with wholesale prices exceeding NT$47 per kilogram since Sept. 21. On Sept. 22 the average transaction price for bok choy reached NT$59.4 per kilogram, an 18.9% increase from Sept. 20.

Chen Shang-jen (陳尚仁), head of the vegetable division at the food agency, noted that while the rains have impacted vegetable yields in Kaohsiung, the overall national supply remains unaffected. Chen stated that as the weather stabilizes, consumers can expect vegetable prices to return to normal levels by early October.

The Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (高雄農改場) also advised farmers to ensure proper drainage in fields to prevent crop root damage due to prolonged waterlogging.
