BEIJING (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO, 國台辦) of the State Council urged Evergreen Group (長榮集團) on Wednesday (Sept. 11) to uphold the "1992 Consensus" (九二共識) and oppose Taiwan independence (台獨) in order to maintain peaceful cross-strait relations.
Chen Bin-hua (陳斌華), the TAO spokesperson, stressed that China welcomes Taiwanese businesses investing in the mainland, but warned that companies supporting Taiwan's independence would face consequences.
The call from the TAO follows a recent controversy during the Olympics, where a Chinese influencer accused the Evergreen Laurel Hotel (巴黎長榮桂冠酒店) in Paris of displaying the national flags of participating countries while omitting the Chinese flag. Evergreen responded by affirming its stance on the "1992 Consensus" and opposition to Taiwan's independence.
Regarding Din Tai Fung's (鼎泰豐) closure of 14 outlets in Beijing, Tianjin, Xi'an, and other cities, Chen acknowledged that businesses make decisions based on various factors. He maintained that China remains the best investment choice for Taiwanese enterprises and promised to continue creating favorable conditions for their development.
