TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Deputy Interior Minister Ma Shih-yuan (馬士元) on Monday (Sept. 9) emphasized the need to rethink disaster prevention strategies in response to climate change and global warming.
The official made a comment while attending a seminar on extreme heat measures, urging Taiwan to adopt Japan's long-term preparations, including warnings and public education.
At the same seminar, Taipei City Councilor Vincent Chao (趙怡翔) suggested the government review responses to the urban heat island effect and heat-related injuries, especially for vulnerable populations. Chao stressed the importance of comprehensive care for these groups.
Councilor Yen Jo-fang (顏若芳) highlighted the ongoing threat of heat-related deaths, noting that high temperatures impact human health and economic productivity. She proposed increasing green tree planting, enhancing urban ventilation corridors, and protecting citizens' right to shade as potential solutions for Taipei.
Chao and Yen collectively committed to monitoring Taipei's budget for heat injury prevention. They emphasized the need for adequate supplies, evacuation care, and scenario-based response evaluations to ensure the city's preparedness for extreme heat events.
