TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan United Nations Alliance (台灣聯合國協進會, TAIUNA) announced on Monday (Sept. 9) that it will send a delegation to New York and Washington, D.C., from Sept. 12 to Sept. 20 to request for a hearing on Taiwan's international status. This move responds to growing international attention on United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.
TAIUNA, along with Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislators Ariel Chang (張雅琳) and Chen Kuan-ting (陳冠廷), held a press conference at the Legislative Yuan on Monday, stating that TAIUNA President Lin Yi-min (林逸民) has sent an open letter to U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres (古特瑞斯), highlighting Taiwan's longstanding obstacles to joining the U.N.
The letter argues that Resolution 2758 has been misinterpreted to recognize the People's Republic of China as the legitimate government of China. TAIUNA emphasizes that the resolution does not address Taiwan's sovereignty or imply that China has sovereignty over Taiwan.
During their stay in New York and Washington, D.C., the "2024 TAIUNA U.N. Delegation" will participate in key events. These include an international press conference on Resolution 2758, the "KEEP Taiwan Free rally," visits to Taiwanese schools in Washington, D.C., and a forum on Taiwan's democracy and international status co-hosted by the Hudson Institute and The Washington Times.
TAIUNA's efforts aim to correct misconceptions about Taiwan's sovereignty and bolster support for its U.N. membership bid. As the delegation embarks on its journey, the international community's response will be closely watched.
