TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A scorching heatwave is gripping Taiwan, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 37 degrees Celsius in the north on Thursday (Sept. 5), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署). The sweltering conditions are a result of clear skies and subsiding air from Typhoon Yagi's (摩羯) outer circulation, pushing the mercury between 33°C and 35°C across most areas.
The CWA noted that outer circulation from the typhoon continues to impact Taiwan. Southeastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) face significant rainfall, while Keelung's (基隆) northern coast, Yilan (宜花), and southern areas experience scattered showers.
Other regions, including Penghu (澎湖), Kinmen (金門), and Matsu (馬祖), enjoy mostly sunny to cloudy skies with afternoon thunderstorms in central and southern mountain areas.
Strong gusts will affect coastal areas from New Taipei (新北) to Hsinchu (新竹), the Hengchun Peninsula, and Kinmen until Sept. 8. Also, long waves may occur along the southern coast, the Hengchun Peninsula, Penghu, Orchid Island (蘭嶼), and Green Island (綠島).
As of 2 a.m. today, Typhoon Yagi was located approximately 550 kilometers southwest of Cape Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻). The storm is expected to move west-northwest this weekend, nearing Hainan Island, Leizhou Peninsula, Guangxi, and Vietnam. The CWA confirmed that Typhoon Yagi will not directly affect Taiwan's weather.
Residents should remain cautious of localized thunderstorms and high temperatures. The CWA advises monitoring weather updates and preparing for potential strong winds and long waves in affected coastal areas.
