TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan experienced unstable weather on Tuesday (Aug. 20) as a low-pressure system brought increased moisture and southwest winds. This resulted in intermittent showers and thunderstorms in central and southern regions, as well as Penghu (澎湖), Kinmen (金門) and Matsu (馬祖).
Meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩) predicted that rainfall would gradually decrease in the afternoon, and noted that the southwest winds have started to weaken. He warned, however, that northern Taiwan might still see isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Lin further outlined three distinct weather phases for the day: from early to late morning, a convective system from offshore moved in, raising the chances of heavy rain in the southern regions. During the daytime, central and southern areas saw a slight reduction in rainfall, although localized heavy showers persisted.
In the afternoon, northern Taiwan and mountainous regions faced thunderstorms and potentially heavy rain. By evening, the weakening southwest winds will lead to a noticeable decrease in moisture, causing rainfall to taper off or stop entirely, the weather expert added.
Meanwhile, temperature variations across Taiwan showed highs of 30 to 33 degrees Celsius in central and southern regions, while other areas saw temperatures between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius. Taitung (台東) recorded the highest temperatures, ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.
