TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced on Sunday (Sept. 1) that he has no plans to visit the United States due to pressing domestic and geopolitical concerns. Speaking during a televised interview, Lai highlighted the U.S. election period and Taiwan's internal issues as primary reasons for not scheduling foreign visits.
He also cited broader geopolitical concerns, including the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, as factors influencing his decision. Despite not planning a visit, Lai reassured that the U.S. is well-informed about the policies and national development goals Taiwan is pursuing.
The president credited strong Taiwan-U.S. relations to former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and current Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴). He praised Tsai's eight-year tenure for establishing robust communication channels with the U.S., which Hsiao continues to enhance.
Lai further noted that Tsai's leadership has significantly altered global perceptions of Taiwan, elevating its standing in the international community. He expressed gratitude for Tsai's efforts, committing to build on her achievements to foster a more confident, stable, and forward-looking Taiwan.
