TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A recent report by Trend Shine Technology Co., Ltd. (全向科技房產中心) has revealed that the median rental prices for studio apartments near the top 10 universities in Taiwan are skyrocketing.
The data, compiled for the 2024 academic year, shows that the median rent for a studio near National Taiwan University (NTU, 台灣大學) reaches NT$18,499, with six universities in northern Taiwan having median rents exceeding NT$10,000.
The universities with rents over NT$10,000 include NTU, Fu Jen Catholic University (輔仁大學), Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (陽明交通大學), National Tsing Hua University (清華大學), Ming Chuan University (銘傳大學), and Chinese Culture University (中國文化大學).
The report highlights that even lower-quality shared rooms near these universities cost at least NT$5,650 per month, with prices near National Taiwan University reaching up to NT$8,500.
Chen Chieh-ming (陳傑鳴), director of Trend Shine Technology Co., Ltd., noted that rising housing prices and rents across Taiwan have increasingly burdened students, claiming that if students want to save money, they have to look for lower-quality shared rooms, significantly affecting their quality of life.
Data from the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS, 主計總處) shows that the national rent index has risen for 36 consecutive months, recently hitting record highs. Chen underscored that the government needs to pay more attention to this issue as the rental burden is impacting students.
The ongoing surge in rental prices near universities raises concerns about the deteriorating quality of student housing. Addressing this issue effectively will require a collective effort from society to alleviate the financial strain on students.
