TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) announced on Tuesday (Aug. 20) that her beloved black dog, Maru, passed away the previous day. Often seen but rarely the focus in photos, Maru was a cherished companion. Tsai wrote, "Maru, have a good journey. I will always remember you."
In her Facebook post, Tsai highlighted that Aug. 17, the third Saturday of August, was International Homeless Animals' Day. She expressed her gratitude to those who adopt and care for stray animals in Taiwan and acknowledged their crucial role.
Tsai had adopted three retired guide dogs: Bella, Maru, and Bunny. She shared that Bella passed away last September, and now Maru has left us. Recently, Tsai celebrated Maru's 16th birthday, reflecting on Maru's resilience despite his age and frailty.
On Maru's passing, Tsai shared that no one can fully prepare for losing a family member but underscored the importance of saying a proper farewell. Tsai expressed her appreciation for Maru's years of companionship and found solace in the thought that Maru and Bella are now reunited, easing her heartache.
