TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Thursday (Aug. 8) praised weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) for securing her third Olympic medal despite multiple injuries and a tough competition.

Kuo, known as the "Goddess of Weightlifting", won a bronze medal in the 59-kilogram category at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, making her the first Taiwanese athlete to win medals in three consecutive Olympic Games.

Kuo lifted 105 kilograms in the snatch and 130 kilograms in the clean and jerk, totaling 235 kilograms.

President Lai noted on Facebook that Kuo faced immense pressure returning to the Olympics after winning gold in Tokyo and overcoming injuries.

"She withstood the pressure and brought home her third Olympic medal, bringing honor to Taiwan," Lai said.

Kuo, who has previously won five Asian Championship golds and five World Championship golds, continues to train and rehabilitate despite her injuries.

Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) also highlighted Kuo's resilience, saying, "Kuo successfully overcame her back injury after the last Olympics and showcased the perfect blend of strength and beauty in Paris."

Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) also congratulated Kuo on Facebook, recalling the wear marks on her training mats at the National Sports Training Center. 「It's hard to imagine the thousands of repetitions she endured for that moment of glory,」 Cho said. He commended Kuo's kindness and community spirit, adding, 「Thank you, Kuo, for showing us infinite possibilities. We are proud of you.」

Meanwhile, taekwondo athlete Lo Chia-ling (羅嘉翎) competed in the women's 57-kilogram round of 16 but lost 0-2 to a Lebanese opponent. President Lai assured Lo she need not apologize or feel guilty, praising her indomitable spirit and thanking her for her continued efforts on the field.
