TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署) reported unstable weather across Taiwan on Friday (Aug. 9) due to a low-pressure system.

The southern and central regions, as well as Penghu, will experience sporadic showers or thunderstorms, particularly from early morning to noon, with a chance of localized heavy rain.

The CWA issued a heavy rain advisory for Chiayi County and Tainan City and a rain advisory for Chiayi City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County.

Meteorological site WeatherRisk highlighted that southwesterly winds near Taiwan bring moisture, causing strong convective development and short-term heavy rain from Yunlin to Pingtung during the early morning and night.

WeatherRisk also advised caution for afternoon thunderstorms in the mountainous areas of northern Taiwan, including the Greater Taipei area, and Yilan County, and suggested the public avoid mountain and river activities in the afternoon.

The CWA noted that due to cloudy and rainy conditions, temperatures in the southern and eastern regions will generally be between 33 and 34 degrees Celsius, with areas near mountains or valleys in the Greater Taipei area, Taoyuan, Hualien, and Taitung potentially exceeding 36 degrees.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Maria is currently 2,460 kilometers northeast of Taipei, moving northward without directly impacting Taiwan's weather.

WeatherRisk predicted that Tropical Storm Maria would hit northern Honshu, Japan, between next Tuesday and Wednesday. Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) mentioned that Tropical Storm Maria would continue moving north, affecting Japan's eastern coast and northern regions.

Wu also warned that the low-pressure system would persist over the next week, fostering more disturbances. Taiwan, on the edge of this system, will see moisture-laden southwesterly winds causing unstable atmospheric conditions.
