TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Weather expert Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) predicted on Thursday (Aug. 1) that Taiwan will experience hot weather due to high pressure over the next week, with afternoon thunderstorms expected in some areas.
Chia also warned that a large low-pressure zone southeast of Japan could develop into a tropical depression or typhoon early next week.
He forecasted short-term afternoon showers on Friday in mountainous areas and in Yilan (宜蘭), Hualien (花蓮), and Taitung (台東). Tainan (臺南), Kaohsiung (高雄), and Pingtung (屏東) may see scattered short-term rain on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, Chia expects scattered short-term rain in the mountainous regions south of Taichung (臺中). Nantou (南投) and Chiayi (嘉義) may experience isolated showers or thunderstorms on Monday afternoon, with scattered short-term rain predicted for the mountains south of Miaoli (苗栗).
Next Tuesday afternoon, areas south of Taoyuan (桃園) and in Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung may see isolated short-term showers.
Chia noted that there were no signs of significant tropical disturbances developing in the seas east of the Philippines and the South China Sea over the next 10 days. However, he emphasized the possibility of a tropical depression forming in the waters southeast of Japan.
Though the forecast's accuracy decreases beyond five days, he advised the public to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
