PARIS (TVBS News) — The Olympic Games Paris 2024 revealed the boxing matchups on Thursday (July 25), setting the stage for Taiwan's athletes, with Huang Hsiao-wen (黃筱雯) set to face Montenegro's Bojana Gojkovic in the Women's 54 kg event on Saturday (July 27).
Huang, who won Taiwan's first Olympic boxing medal with a bronze in Tokyo 2020, secured her spot in June after setbacks at the 2023 Asian Games and the first Olympic Qualifier Series 2024. In the round of 16, she may face Bulgaria's Stanimira Petrova, a two-time European champion, and China's Chang Yuan (常園) in the quarterfinals.
Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) will compete in the Women's 60 kg event against South Korea's Oh Yeon-ji (吳妍智), a gold medalist at the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games and a two-time bronze medalist at the IBA World Boxing Championships.
Chen Nien-chin (陳念琴) will face Maria Moronta from the Dominican Republic in the Women's 66 kg event. If victorious, Chen will meet Brazil's Barbara Maria dos Santos in the round of 16 and potentially China's Yang Liu (楊柳), who defeated her at the 2023 Asian Games semifinals.
Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷), Lai Chu-en (賴主恩), and Kan Chia-wei (甘家葳) will all start from the round of 16 in their respective categories. In his first match, Kan will face Omari Jones from the U.S., the 2021 World Championship silver medalist.
Fans eagerly await these crucial bouts, hoping for another historic performance by Taiwan's boxers.
