TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) stated on Wednesday (July 24) that Typhoon Gaemi's (凱米) accumulated rainfall could reach up to 1,800 millimeters, urging residents to prepare three days' worth of food and water, and to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
Typhoon Gaemi has intensified into a severe typhoon as of Wednesday, prompting urgent warnings from government officials.
Liu emphasized that Taiwan is now under land warning, with the typhoon expected to strengthen and its storm radius to expand. She called on everyone to stay vigilant and ensure comprehensive preparedness.
Meanwhile, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) inspected the Central Emergency Operation Center Wednesday morning to assess preparedness.
Moreover, the Ministry of Agriculture (農業部) warned that the central and southern mountainous regions could experience significant rainfall, issuing red and yellow mudslide alerts.
Except for Kinmen County (金門縣), all local governments have suspended work and school and are urging the media to help disseminate typhoon safety precautions.
Typhoon Gaemi storm radius made landfall at 6 a.m., bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Liu instructed disaster response centers to enhance disaster reporting and upload information to the EMIC system.
She also stressed the importance of maintaining regular communication with remote areas and planning for potential communication disruptions.
Liu called for full mobilization of water, electricity, and transportation teams to repair any damage caused by the storm swiftly. She urged them to restore normalcy for residents while ensuring their own safety.
