TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Labor (MOL, 勞動部) reported a 30.42% increase in the number of Hong Kong and Macau students opting to work in Taiwan after graduation from 2021 to May 2024.
These graduates primarily find employment in five major sectors: professional, scientific, and technical services; wholesale and retail trade; accommodation and food services; publishing, audiovisual, and information services; and healthcare and social work.
The government has introduced several policies to encourage more Hong Kong and Macau students to stay in Taiwan for work. These measures include relaxing the point system for foreign students remaining in Taiwan and expanding job roles such as social workers.
Director Lee Chin-mei (李晉梅) of the Mainland Affairs Council, Hong Kong, Macao, Inner Mongolia and Tibet Affairs Division (大陸委員會港澳蒙藏處), emphasized that various supportive measures provide more employment options for Hong Kong and Macau students.
U News chief executive officer Wei Chia-hui (魏佳卉) noted that Hong Kong and Macau students often choose courses that facilitate future employment in Taiwan. These courses include medicine, law, accounting, and information and communications technology, which qualify for national examinations, as well as popular fields like media, design, and cultural and creative industries.
Applications for Hong Kong and Macau students wishing to study in Taiwan in 2024 have entered the final countdown. Prospective students can access information and prepare their applications through the 2024 Taiwan High School and Vocational Education Exhibition (2024臺灣高中職五專教育展), U News' Hong Kong section, the University Entrance Committee For Overseas Chinese Students website, and various university admission sites.
