TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) plans to introduce short-term five or seven-day TPASS options by the end of the year to cater to tourists and business travelers, with Minister of Transportation and Communications Li Meng-yen (李孟諺) announcing the initiative on Thursday (July 11) during the 70th anniversary of Taiwan's Maritime Day.
Li stated that the short-term TPASS will be available for up to 14 days. This aims to meet the needs of those requiring public transportation for shorter periods. The MOTC is negotiating with various counties and cities to offer attractive pricing to encourage public transport use.
The minister highlighted that public transportation usage peaked in 2019 before the pandemic. However, ridership on Taiwan High Speed Rail, Taiwan Railway, and metros significantly declined during the pandemic.
Legislator Lee Kun-tse (李昆澤) recently criticized the TPASS, claiming that public transport usage decreased despite its implementation.
In response, Li noted that since the TPASS launch on July 1 last year, many public transportation systems have seen increased usage. He pointed out that Taoyuan Airport Metro ridership rose by nearly 80%, and railway usage increased by over 20%.
Li emphasized the MOTC's commitment to boosting public transport usage through TPASS, acknowledging changes in commuting patterns due to more people working from home during and after the pandemic.
He also stressed the need for more convenient and varied TPASS options to promote public transport. The MOTC aims to adapt to the changing environment and meet diverse needs, ensuring continued growth in public transportation usage.
