TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Railway is eyeing fare hikes after 29 years, with Minister of Transportation and Communications Li Meng-yen (李孟諺) saying on Wednesday (July 10) that a fare hike is necessary. However, Taiwan Railway Corporation (TRC) is still formulating the adjustment plan, Li added.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) minister noted that train ticket prices are significantly lower than those of other modes of transportation. For example, fares from Taipei to Banqiao are NT$25 by MRT, NT$30 by bus, and NT$15 by train. He emphasized that fare adjustments are essential for the TRC's sustainable operation.
When asked about the progress and details of the fare adjustment plan, Li said, "Currently, I understand that Taiwan Railway Corporation is still formulating a plan." He added that the board must finalize the plan before being submitted to the MOTC for review.
Following the April 3 Hualien earthquake, the railways in eastern Taiwan have experienced multiple incidents, including rockfalls and landslides, leading to train derailments and traffic disruptions. Additionally, recent heavy rains have heightened public concerns about safety.
Li has mandated enhanced safety measures, and the TRC has installed surveillance cameras and deployed personnel for 24-hour monitoring. Li stated that over 100 cameras have been added between Yilan and Hualien, with 20 more to be installed by the end of July, ensuring immediate response to any anomalies.
