TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) criticized President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday (June 26) for his remarks that "the opposition should not rashly take action." Ko expressed concern over the implication that laws passed by the Legislature could be disregarded by the president if he deems them inappropriate.
Ko's comments were in response to Lai's decision on June 24 to request constitutional interpretation and temporary disposition regarding the amendments to the Law Governing the Legislature's Power. Ko pointed out that the request for constitutional interpretation could drag on for two to three years. He drew parallels to Lai's tenure as Tainan mayor when he did not attend city council meetings for over 200 days, noting that Lai's behavior has not changed even after becoming president.
Ko accused Lai of creating a constitutional crisis, stating that although Lai claims to protect Taiwan's constitutional system, he is actually leading its destruction and disorder. Ko further accused the president of publicly spreading rumors when Lai suggested that the investigative power of hearings could infringe on corporate trade secrets.
Regarding Lai's recent announcement to establish three major committees, Ko questioned whether the existing organizations in the Executive Yuan are insufficient for him to appoint his preferred individuals. Ko demanded that Lai clarify these committees' future operations, business goals, and political responsibilities.
