TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Minister of Health and Welfare Hsueh Jui-yuan acknowledged on Thursday (March 14) that both central and local authorities have a share in the responsibility for a recent child abuse case that has shocked the nation. Hsueh stated that his department will promptly examine the case, which will include an amendment to The Protection of Children and Youths Welfare and Rights Act.
A daycare worker in Taipei, who was hired by the Child Welfare League Foundation in September 2023, is accused of abusing a one-year-old boy to death along with her sister. The shocking case has caused an uproar in the society.
In response, Hsueh mentioned that the implementation of child rights law is primarily at the local level. If there are issues in communication and interpretation between the central and local authorities, the Ministry of Health and Welfare will take responsibility and provide a uniform explanation.
Additionally, there has been concern because Taipei has not called a review meeting for this case. Hsueh emphasized that the local government can immediately hold a review meeting for major child abuse cases instead of asking the Ministry for further clarification and instruction.
