TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As the European Parliament prepares for the upcoming elections, a groundbreaking collaboration has been established with the European News Exchange Network (ENEX) to confront significant global challenges and combat the surge of fake news. This alliance, solidified through a memorandum of understanding signed on Thursday (Feb. 22), is aimed at bolstering democratic processes and promoting well-informed public dialogue.

Tackling Global Challenges and Disinformation

Adrian Wells, managing director of ENEX, underscored the critical nature of the partnership with the European Parliament, Commission, and Council, emphasizing the pivotal role of the upcoming elections. "This time, there are some really crucial issues that people realize have to be sorted out at the European level," Wells said. He cited the Russia-Ukraine conflict, fake news, economic development, and climate change as key issues that cannot be addressed solely by individual nations, highlighting the significance of the European elections in June for everyone's future.

Delphine Colard, deputy spokesperson of the European Parliament, echoed the sentiment regarding the importance of safeguarding democracy against the backdrop of disinformation. "We know that there are actors trying to sow distrust in our democratic processes," Colard stated, pointing to the persistent threat of disinformation narratives and tactics. She further mentioned the European Union's proactive stance with the Artificial Intelligence Act, which is nearing completion and aims to regulate disinformation efforts.

Focus on Taiwan and Legislative Actions

Amid the broader context of European concerns, attention has also been drawn to Taiwan and its democratic integrity. Colard confirmed that all missions and delegations to Taiwan are suspended until the end of the current legislative term, reflecting the heightened scrutiny of international relations with Taiwan, especially following recent visits by U.S. lawmakers to the island. Despite the suspension, there is ongoing attention to democracy issues in Taiwan, with European Parliament committees and delegations closely monitoring developments in Asia.

This strategic partnership between the European Parliament and ENEX represents a concerted effort to address the multifaceted challenges facing Europe and the wider world. By focusing on critical issues such as disinformation and supporting democratic institutions, both organizations aim to ensure a more informed and resilient democratic process as the European elections approach.
