TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen stated on Tuesday (Feb. 27) that his term will conclude on May 20, as initially agreed with President Tsai Ing-wen on his appointment.
During an interpellation session at the Legislative Yuan earlier that day, Chen emphasized his love for academic research and stated his intention to return to Academia Sinica following his tenure.
As Vice President Lai Ching-te is set to formally take office as President on May 20, reports have emerged that Lai is considering inviting Chen to continue serving as Premier; despite his upcoming presidential role.
Responding to speculation that Lai might request Chen's retention via President Tsai, the Premier gestured towards his prior commitment to academe by claiming: "I should go back (to the Academia Sinica).
