TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's commitment to aiding Japan in the aftermath of a devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake on the Noto Peninsula was highlighted in Yahoo! Japan on Thursday (Jan. 4). The earthquake, which unfolded on Jan. 1 and led to numerous aftershocks, prompted Taiwan to pledge 60 million Japanese yen (about NT$13 million) for disaster relief.

This gesture of solidarity was warmly received by the Japanese public, with many expressing deep gratitude online. One comment noted Taiwan's significant support during Japan's 2011 earthquake, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu stated that the donated funds would be channeled towards assisting Japan's government in both relief and reconstruction efforts. To further facilitate this aid, Taiwan's Executive Yuan has directed the Ministry of Health and Welfare to establish an account for both domestic and international contributions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan, along with other related units, remains in close communication with Japan, prepared to extend additional support as needed. The situation remains critical, with the death toll reaching 84 and 79 people still missing as of Jan. 4, marking the end of the crucial 72-hour window for rescue operations.
