TAIPEI (TVBS News) — With the 2024 presidential elections approaching, Taiwan is under increased scrutiny due to rising cross-strait tensions.
TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu discussed on Nov. 21 the global "Taiwan issue," China's coercion strategies, and the potential impacts of a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) victory in Taiwan with former American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Chair Richard Bush.
Post-APEC summit, Bush addressed concerns about Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent openness to bilateral talks with U.S. President Joe Biden, suggesting there's no heightened worry for Taiwan. “I do not think they should be worried any more worried than they already are,” Bush stated, seeing no significant change in the situation.
Bush highlighted Beijing's shift to non-violent coercion tactics aimed at pressuring and undermining Taiwan, specifically targeting the DPP administration. He believes these strategies intend to demoralize Taiwanese citizens, a low-risk approach for China.
On the topic of a rumored Chinese invasion in 2027, Bush, co-author of "U.S.-Taiwan Relations," noted the PLA's maintained combat readiness but differentiated between capabilities and intentions. He reassured that the U.S. is prepared for the outcomes of Taiwan's elections and hopes for a competent government for the Taiwanese people.
"I do hope that Taiwan gets a government that is smart, coherent, and effective. That's what the people deserve," he concluded.
