TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese drivers are expressing their frustrations on social media following the implementation of new road regulations on July 1. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) amended Section 43 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act on June 30.
The first clause of this revised provision stipulates that drivers who exceed the maximum speed limit by more than 40 kilometers per hour will be fined between NT＄6,000 and NT＄36,000 and will have their license suspended on the spot. The fourth provision states that offenders will have their license suspended for six months.
Despite Taiwan's reputation as a dangerous place for pedestrians, according to CNN, some Taiwanese drivers are calling for the previous threshold to be reinstated. The previous threshold allowed drivers to exceed the maximum speed limit by 60 kilometers per hour.
The MOTC emphasizes that globally, "speed management" is considered a vital element for road safety. Therefore, excessive speeding is considered a severe offense, as a faster speed can narrow a driver's field of vision and shorten their reaction time.
Regarding the messages on social media, the MOTC urges citizens to comply with established traffic rules and not take chances.
