TAIPEI (TVBS News) — With the January elections in Taiwan on the horizon, the presidential nominee of the Democratic Progressive Party, Lai Ching-te, is committed to securing the nation's future.
To the presidential hopeful, his main goal is to ensure the DPP remains at the helm, steering Taiwan toward peace and prosperity.
Drawing from his eight years as vice president under the Tsai administration, Lai's experience within the government runs deep, and he's known for his unwavering dedication.
But it's not just about the inner workings of government. Lai also excels at connecting with people from all walks of life. He tailors his speeches to different audiences, making small adjustments for better understanding and improved communication.
"It's not just different people, it's a different community," Lai explained.
He acknowledged that though it may mean more work for him, he believes it conveys sincerity and does it "out of respect for everyone."
Yet, in a time when "pro-independence" and the DPP are often mentioned in the same sentence due to rising cross-strait tensions, Lai gently reminds us that peace is a hard-won prize, one that requires vigilance.
"The consensus of the global community remains that we must boost our national defense capacities," he said.
"We don't seek war, but we don't fear war. By preparing ourselves, we can hopefully avoid war and achieve peace."
Turning his attention to Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang, Lai emphasizes his unwavering stance on Taiwan's sovereignty, urging the nation to stand firm against looming threats.
He reiterated that Taiwan cannot achieve peace by giving up its sovereignty or "by accepting the 1992 Consensus or One China Policy."
Amid recent scandals within the DPP, Lai admits that there is still room for improvement.
His commitment to the nation remains steadfast and unshaken, a testament to his resolute determination to serve and lead Taiwan toward a prosperous future.
