TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman and presidential hopeful Lai Ching-te is expected to attend the 21st Taiwan Pride Parade on Saturday, according to local Chinese media.
Despite a busy campaign schedule, Lai will carve out time to join the parade, ETtoday said on Tuesday (Oct. 24).
During his time as the Mayor of Tainan, William Lai was a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and encouraged other municipalities to respect and enhance LGBTQ+ rights.
As the current party chairman, Lai has been actively engaged in discussions about gender equality issues.
On the fourth anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage in May, he emphasized that "human rights have no winners or losers" and that the government should focus on bridging societal divisions caused by misunderstandings.
Lai hopes Taiwan can serve as an example of gender equality in Asia.
In June, marking the 19th year since the enactment of the Gender Equity Education Act, Lai expressed the government's unwavering commitment to reviewing gender equality regulations sincerely, in line with Taiwan's aspiration to be a more understanding and inclusive society.
The Taiwan Pride Parade, themed "Stand with Diversity," will unfold at the Taipei City Hall Plaza.
