TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Several health experts predicted on Thursday (Oct. 12) that by the end of 2023, a combined outbreak of COVID-19, influenza, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) might occur, with the average daily number of COVID-19 cases reaching up to 24,000.
As Taiwan's flu season typically peaks between November and January, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) urged the public to promptly receive Moderna's latest COVID-19 vaccine, available to people of all ages since Wednesday.
Referring to the Epidemic Intelligence Center projection model, CDC Spokesperson Tseng Shu-hui noted that "confirmed COVID-19 cases are anticipated to steadily increase from mid-October and peak at the end of December, with daily cases projected to range between 22,000 and 24,000."
Meanwhile, Juan Chien-chang, director of pediatrics at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Hospital, advised parents with school-age children should have them vaccinated as soon as possible.
"It will take two weeks for the body to develop immunity after vaccination."
Recent data from the CDC reported over 110,000 nationwide flu cases last week, 11 flu-related deaths, and 34 severe illness complications. Of the deceased, seven individuals were not vaccinated.
In addition to getting the vaccine shots, Juan further reminded the general public to wash their hands frequently to prevent the virus from spreading.
