PINGTUNG (TVBS News) — In the aftermath of the recent fatal explosion in the Pingtung Launch Technologies factory, Pingtung Christian Hospital announced on Monday (Sept. 25) that it is temporarily suspending visits for Chen Wen-chuan, the leader of Pingtung's Fire Bureau's Second Squad.
Chen sustained severe injuries from the incident and fell into a coma. Upon waking, he cried, "I am the only survivor from my squad!"
The tragic event on Sept. 22 resulted in numerous casualties, including the loss of four firefighters. Chen, injured while rescuing others, sustained severe burns to his hands and face due to the intense flames.
Vice President Lai Ching-te and Premier Chen Chien-jen visited Chen on Sept. 24 at the hospital. Lai witnessed the fireman break down in tears while Chen recounted to the premier, "My brothers did not make it out."
Liu Su-yuan, deputy superintendent of medical affairs at Pingtung Christian Hospital, expressed Chen's gratitude for the public's concern but stressed that Chen needs to rest. Consequently, the hospital has declined further visits starting on Monday.
