TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang presidential hopeful Hou Yu-ih addressed key issues, including Taiwan-U.S. ties, cross-strait relations, self-defense, and energy policies on Monday (Sept. 18) at a meeting held at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Hou pledged to defend Taiwan while respecting the Constitution of the Republic of China and stressed Taiwan's determination for self-defense. He also advocated for a "3D defense policy," including deterrence, dialogue, and de-escalation, all to stabilize the Asia-Pacific region and lessen the burden on the U.S. and its democratic allies.

The meeting was hosted by Richard C. Bush, former chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), along with Ryan Hass, director of the John L. Thornton China Center, and Bonnie S. Glaser, a scholar of the Marshall Plan Foundation. All speakers underscored the U.S.'s concern about Mainland China's threat to Taiwan and its commitment to support Taiwan in different aspects.

Hou's policy stance includes adhering to the 1992 Consensus under the Constitution of the Republic of China, opposing Taiwan's independence and "one country, two systems." These views, particularly his emphasis on a "Constitutional 1992 Consensus," caught the attention of the U.S.
