TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former President Ma Ying-jeou on Monday (Sept. 11) criticized Vice President Lai Ching-te's reiterated stance on 'the Republic of China and People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other,' made in August this year.

Ma stressed that Lai's remark poses a significant threat to the peaceful stability of cross-strait relations while giving an opening remark at the "2023 Geopolitics Summit" earlier that day.

The former president voiced concerns about Lai's stance, cautioning that mainland China's reaction merits scrutiny.

Furthermore, Ma blamed President Tsai Ing-wen from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for a swift deterioration in cross-strait relations following her refusal to accept the '1992 Consensus' after entering office in May 2016.

In response, Chen Shih-kai, spokesperson of Lai's campaign office, stated that Lai's position reflects a public consensus evident in polls and claimed that Ma's statement was inaccurate.
