TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Despite Typhoon Haikui moving away, food prices in Taiwan remain high.
Local vendors said that running a business is a challenge as tomato prices increase by around 30% to over NT$ 100 per 600 grams.
Although bitter melon costs have remained stable at NT$60-70 per 600 grams, the reduced quality of waterlogged crops has led to consumer interest dropping by around 30%.
Green onions have seen a price increase of NT$ 30 per bundle, bringing the market price to NT$ 320 per kilogram. Meanwhile, cabbages from Yunlin are being sold for NT$150 per 600 grams, meaning a head of cabbage could be listed at around NT$600.
As locally grown produce prices have skyrocketed, imported vegetables have also become more expensive due to disrupted shipping schedules. The imported lettuce and broccoli prices have since increased from NT$110 to NT$150 per kilogram.
Additionally, egg prices have risen from NT$40.5 to NT$43.5 per 600 grams.
Some merchants disclosed that the egg shortage situation continues to worsen due to the high cost of chicken rearing and reduced egg-laying following the typhoon.
