CHANGHUA (TVBS News) — The "Changhua City Cleanteam" announced on Tuesday (Sept. 5) that the 150 people who littered at Sanmin Park a day earlier when Typhoon Haikui hit the city would each face a fine of NT＄1,200.
Since the city government suspended school and work on Monday when the typhoon swept across the island, the city's waste disposal team paused their services for a day. However, despite the absence of a garbage truck, many still carried their domestic waste to the location, dumping their trash on site.
Residents thus complained about huge piles of scattered garbage at the park later that day.
After receiving the complaints, a team was promptly dispatched in the afternoon for a cleanup, which took over half an hour as nearly one ton of garbage was dumped near the area.
The Changhua City Office reviewed surveillance footage to identify those who littered and discovered a man who showed up around 7:20 a.m., discarded a bag of trash, and left after noticing the garbage truck's absence.
Later, a truck was seen disposing of three large bags of waste, followed by several people who did the same. After an hour and a half, the gigantic garbage pile created an unbearable foul smell.
The city office estimated it would take five days to identify the offending license plates and issue fines, thus holding the relevant vehicle owners and other litterbugs accountable.
