TAITUNG (TVBS News) — The 2023 Taiwan International Balloon Festival, running until Aug. 28 in Taitung County, is poised to mesmerize tourists from around the globe with an expanded program filled with thrilling activities.

A highlight of this year's festival is the captivating "Glow Concerts" — nine sessions of live music and hot air balloons. Adding to the spectacle, a fleet of 700 drones illuminates the sky with awe-inspiring graphics, setting a new global record for the largest simultaneous display of hot air balloons and drones.

The opening "Glow Concert," held on July 1, captivated audiences with its mesmerizing blend of hot air balloons and a beautiful sky lit up by stunning light projections and laser shows. The night was a spectacle to behold as 700 drones took flight, forming myriad shapes and vibrant colors.

Famous singers, such as Janice Yan and Namewee, added an extra layer of entertainment to the event, and the grand finale was marked by a dazzling fireworks display that left everyone in awe.

The 2023 Taitung Balloon Festival also features the debut of the world's only "Mazu-themed Hot Air Balloon." Sponsored by the Taitung Tianhou Temple, this new and adorable version of Mazu, a popular deity in Taiwanese culture, is meant to carry heartfelt wishes and blessings.

In addition to the "Glow Concert," the festival offers activities such as hot spring experiences and traditional mochi pounding. With the sight of rice paddies billowing in the wind, Taitung's cultural experiences and natural beauty are sure to enchant tourists from all over the world.

The 2023 Taitung Balloon Festival boasts the highest number of  "Glow Concerts" in the festival's history, including locations such as Chishang Dapo Lake, Luye Highland, Zhiben Hot Spring Area, Taimali Dawn Park, and International Landmark.

Taitung County Magistrate Jao Ching-ling announced that it is the 13th consecutive year that Taitung is hosting the International Balloon Festival.

"Additionally, Taitung has 183 tribes, with Harvest Festivals taking place every weekend," Jao added.

In a heartwarming moment, the beloved vegetable vendor and philanthropist Chen Shu-chu, honored by Time Magazine in 2010 for her philanthropic donations, made a rare appearance during the festival.

The combination of azure skies, white clouds, mountains, lush green fields, and colorful hot air balloons created a picturesque scene that deeply touched the attending audience.

The 2023 Taitung International Balloon Festival showcases Taitung's beauty and cultural richness while providing a breathtaking visual feast of hot air balloons and drones. For more information about the event, visit https://balloontaiwan.taitung.gov.tw/en/event/5134.
