KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — The National Highway Police Bureau confirmed on Tuesday(June 6) that a policewoman from the Linyuan precinct of the Kaohsiung City Police Department will not face fines or penalties following an incident a day earlier, where she rode a police scooter on the highway during a high-speed pursuit.
Wang Po-jung, a sub-lieutenant of the Linyuan precinct traffic branch, explained that police officers are not bound by road signs or markings when carrying out their official duties. Wang further explained that the policewoman had complied with regulations by activating the police siren and emergency lights during the pursuit.
A video capturing the policewoman's actions gained significant attention online. The footage shows her maneuvering between lanes, attempting to navigate through moving vehicles while pursuing a black car that had exceeded the speed limit and run red lights.
In an attempt to elude the pursuing officer, the driver of the black car ventured onto National Highway No.1. Unfamiliar with the highway's conditions but eager to apprehend the suspect, the policewoman unintentionally violated the law by pursuing the vehicle on the highway.
Despite her efforts, the heavy traffic volume prevented the policewoman from apprehending the driver after a 30-minute pursuit, covering a distance of nearly 20 kilometers. The police station has stated that they will identify the driver using the vehicle's license plate, with a potential maximum penalty of NT＄ 39,000.
