TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Honduran President Xiomara Castro dropped a bombshell on Tuesday, announcing her government's intention to establish formal diplomatic relations with China.
The move would effectively end ties with Taiwan, one of the island's few remaining allies, and deprive it of a crucial partner in the international arena.
In a tweet, Castro said she had instructed her foreign affairs minister to pursue the opening of official relations with the People's Republic of China, marking a significant shift in Honduras' foreign policy.
The move comes after neighboring Nicaragua also broke off relations with Taipei and recognized China last year, leaving Taiwan with just 13 countries that maintain full diplomatic relations with it.
The loss of Honduras is sure to be a significant blow to the island nation's international standing.
With Paraguay, the largest country that continues to recognize Taiwan, holding general elections next month, all eyes will be on the ruling Colorado Party, which has historically been pro-Taiwan.
